Bone Graft Without Membrane – A Leap Of Faith

As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, autograft is the forte of my practice. Throughout time, different bone sources, namely allograft, xenograft and synthetic bone have been introduced into my practice; the last was received with some reservation. However, later I realise the indications dictate the type of bone best used for the patients, not the branding or the source of material. EthOss as one bone graft material is different from the typical bone grafts as it avoids the use of a membrane. This material also avoids ethical issue in patients not agreeing to have the product of previously living human or animals used for guided bone regeneration. This presentation shares some of the speakers’ experience using EthOss in different clinical practices.
Synthetic Grafts: Past, Present & Future

The use of bone grafts in Periodontal and Implant surgery has been a staple procedure in clinics worldwide. The outcome of this technique sensitive procedure highly depends on the skill of the clinician and the choice of materials used. As evidence suggests, surgical outcomes can significantly improve with shorter and simpler surgical protocols. But simpler protocols have to be supported by biomaterials that can deliver the expected regenerative results. In this webinar, Dr Renu will discuss how the use of bone grafts has evolved over the years and particularly how the synthetic bone graft which was shunned in the past is making a strong comeback.
About the presenters
Dr David Ngeow
Professor Dr. David Ngeow is currently a lecturer at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Malaya. He graduated from the University of Malaya in 1992. He later became a Senior House Officer at the Queen Victoria Hospital, England, where he obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He subsequently returned to Malaysia and was a pioneer lecturer at the then newly established Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He became a lecturer at the University of Malaya in 2000. He has published 170 papers in local and international journals. He is currently an editorial board member of the Annals of Dentistry of the University of Malaya.
Dr Renukanth Raman
Dr Renukanth Raman obtained a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 2003 from the University of Malaya. Thereafter, he worked as a dental officer in the Ministry of Health Malaysia for 5 years. Completed post-graduate training in Periodontology in 2012 from University of Malaya and subsequently took up a position as a Clinical Specialist in Periodontics & Implantology with the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Actively involved in training Dental Officers in the field of Periodontology and Implantology. Lifetime Member of the Malaysian Society of Periodontology and Member of the International Team for Implantology. Special interest in Periodontal Regeneration, Periodontal Plastic Surgery and Peri-Implantitis. Key Opinion Leader for Ethoss – Biphasic Regenerative Synthetic Graft.
