Ethicon Sutures
ETHICON synthetic absorbable sutures exhibit a range of different characteristics and capabilities. Non-absorbable materials are used to suture tissues requiring long-term or permanent support in which the product strength is critical.
Wound closure products impact every specialty, every procedure and every surgical patient. Ethicon is the global leader in wound closure, with products that help improve patient outcomes, optimise healing and maximise operating room efficiency.
Sutures: Absorbable
VICRYL RAPIDE (polyglactin 910) Suture
VICRYL RAPIDE Suture is a synthetic absorbable sterile surgical suture composed of a copolymer made from 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide.
Coated VICRYL Plus Antibacterial (polyglactin 910) Suture & Coated VICRYL (polyglactin 910) Suture
VICRYL Suture is a synthetic absorbable sterile surgical suture composed of a copolymer made from 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide.
VICRYL Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
VICRYL Plus Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, except for ophthalmic, cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
- Shown in vitro to inhibit bacterial colonization of the suture for 7 days or more
MONOCRYL Plus Antibacterial (poliglecaprone 25) Suture & MONOCRYL (poliglecaprone 25) Suture
MONOCRYL Suture is a monofilament synthetic absorbable surgical suture prepared from a copolymer of glycolide and epsilon-caprolactone.
MONOCRYL Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/ or ligation, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues, microsurgery or ophthalmic surgery.
MONOCRYL Plus Sutures are ideal for subcuticular skin closure.
- High initial breaking strength to maintain wound approximation during the critical first few days of skin healing
- Shown in vitro to inhibit bacterial colonisation of the suture for 7 days or more
Surgical Gut Suture – Chromic
Surgical Gut Suture is an absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from either the serosal layer of beef (bovine) or the submucosal fibrous layer of sheep (ovine) intestines. Surgical Gut Sutures are available in plain or chromic.
Surgical Gut Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
Surgical Gut Suture – Plain
Surgical Gut Suture is an absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from either the serosal layer of beef (bovine) or the submucosal fibrous layer of sheep (ovine) intestines. Surgical Gut Sutures are available in plain or chromic.
Surgical Gut Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but not for use in cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
Sutures: Non-absorbable
ETHILON Nylon Suture
ETHILON Suture is non-absorbable, sterile surgical monofilament suture composed of the longchain aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6.6. ETHILON Suture is dyed black or green to enhance visibility in tissue.
ETHILON Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures.
PERMA-HAND Silk Suture
PERMA-HAND Silk Suture is a non-absorbable, sterile, surgical suture composed of an organic protein called fibroin.
The sutures are processed to remove the natural waxes and gums, and then are dyed black and coated with a special wax mixture. PERMA-HAND Silk Suture is also available in its natural colour.
PERMA-HAND Silk Suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures.
PROLENE Polypropylene Suture
Widely used in general, cardiovascular, plastic and orthopedic surgery, PROLENE Sutures do not adhere to tissue. PROLENE Sutures are relatively biologically inert, offering proven strength, reliability and versatility.
PROLENE suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological procedures.

Bone Wax
A sterile mixture of beeswax, paraffin and isopropyl palmitate, a wax-softening agent.
- May be used for the control of bleeding from bone surfaces
- Achieves local hemostasis of bone by acting as a mechanical barrier
- Does not act biochemically and is non-absorbable
- Should not be used where rapid osseous regeneration and fusion are desired

Surgicel Original
SURGICEL Absorbable Haemostat (oxidised regenerated cellulose) is used adjunctively in surgical procedures to assist in the control of capillary, venous and small arterial haemorrhage when ligation or other conventional methods of control are impractical or ineffective. SURGICEL Original Haemostat can be cut to size for use in endoscopic procedures.

Surgical Fibrillar
A sterile versatile absorbable haemostatic agent suited for the most demanding procedures. Designed to assist in controlling capillary, venous and small arterial haemorrhage when conventional methods are impractical or ineffective, it offers enhanced versatility and adaptability in various surgical procedures. It can be easily separated into layers which conform and melt in to bleeding tissue. Faster 39% faster haemostasis compared to original Surgicel Haemostat.

Spongostan
Sterile, water-insoluble, porcine gelatin absorbable sponge and powder intended for haemostatic use by applying to a bleeding surface. Sponge can be applied to the bleeding site either dry or saturated with sterile isotonic sodium chloride solution (sterile saline) or sterile topical thrombin solution. A doughy paste can be prepared from the powder, using 4-10 mL of saline or thrombin.
