The company’s origins date back to 1893, when Dunlop UK established a bicycle tyre manufacturing plant in Melbourne, Australia. In 1905, Eric Norman Ansell acquired condom manufacturing machinery from Dunlop and founded the Ansell Rubber Company, marking the company’s formal entry into rubber-based protective products. A significant milestone was reached in 1965 with the introduction of GAMMEX gamma-sterilised disposable surgical gloves, reinforcing the company’s growing presence in the medical sector. Between 1970 and 1989, Ansell further diversified by acquiring industrial glove companies and expanding production operations in Malaysia and the United States, strengthening its global manufacturing footprint.

By 1991, Ansell had become the world’s largest provider of medical, household, and industrial gloves. In 1998, the company relocated its global headquarters to the United States, reflecting its expanding international operations and customer base.

From 2007 to 2014, Ansell pursued a strategy of targeted acquisitions, including companies such as Sandel, Microgard, and Comasec. These acquisitions broadened the company’s portfolio beyond gloves to include additional body protection solutions and well-known brands.

Today, more than 130 years after its beginnings, Ansell is an integrated manufacturer of personal protection equipment serving healthcare and industrial workplaces worldwide.
